Judi Thurston is a dedicated community leader and nonprofit professional committed to improving the quality of life for individuals and families throughout the Wilson community. During her career, she has focused on strengthening connections between organizations, resources, and the people they serve. Known as both a problem solver and a passionate advocate for nonprofit organizations, Judi has devoted her professional life to creating meaningful and lasting community impact.
Before joining the United Way staff in 2006, Judi served in numerous leadership roles as a United Way Board Member. In 2013, she was named President & CEO, a role in which she continues to lead strategic initiatives that address the community’s most pressing challenges.
Deeply committed to the well-being and future of Wilson, Judi actively serves on several local boards and committees, sharing her expertise and collaborative leadership approach. She has extensive experience working alongside local agencies, civic partners, volunteers, and community stakeholders to address critical needs, develop innovative programs, and drive measurable outcomes. Her work reflects a strong belief in the power of partnerships and data-informed decision-making to create sustainable change.
Under Judi’s leadership, United Way is advancing the community’s BOLD GOAL: lifting 1,000 households off the path of poverty by 2035. Whether convening stakeholders, advocating for vulnerable populations, or championing initiatives that promote health, education, and financial stability, Judi brings both compassion and expertise to every aspect of her work.
Judi has received numerous honors in recognition of her service and leadership, including the 2025 Guiding Light Award from the Wilson Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanian of the Year Award from the Kiwanis Club of Wilson All-American, and the United Way Volunteer of the Year Award, among many others.
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Judi enjoys spending time with her daughter, Alex; son-in-law, Riley; and grandson, Thurston. She also teaches yoga at the Foundation YMCA, combining her passion for health, wellness, and community connection.
